USTR Issues First Round of Tariffs on Chinese Products
As announced May 29, 2018, President Trump stated the USTR will announce by June 15 the list of products subject to an additional 25 percent duty rate for goods from China. The first list of tariffs include 1102 separate US tariff lines, 818 of which were included in the original 1333 lines that were originally proposed on April 6. CBP will begin collecting the additional 25 percent duty rate effective July 6, 2018. The second set of tariffs will undergo further review in a public notice and comment process, including an additional public hearing.
This first list covers approximately $34 billion worth of imports from China. The 818 product lines were determined after receiving over 3200 written comments an a three-day public hearing from May 15-17, 2018, during which 121 witnesses provided testimony and responded to questions. The public submissions and a transcript of the hearing are available on www.regulations.gov in docket number USTR-2018-0005.
